It efficiently stores energy, does not emit greenhouse gases when produced from renewable sources, and serves sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, from steelmaking to fertilizers. However, its biggest obstacle remains economic. The cost of production is still high, and a large part of it is linked to a specific component of electrolyzers: the membrane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at the Polytechnic School of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, affiliated with RCGI (Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation), have developed a membrane-free electrolyzer specifically designed to address this bottleneck. This proposal repositions Brazil in the international debate on green hydrogen. The country is already known for large production projects, such as the hub at the Pec\u00e9m Complex in Cear\u00e1. Now, it also demonstrates the capacity to generate electrolysis technology at a level competitive with international research centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the membrane in the cost of hydrogen.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In a conventional electrolyzer, the membrane physically separates the hydrogen and oxygen generated during water electrolysis. It is essential to ensure the purity of the gases, but it is also one of the most expensive and fragile parts of the system. According to Vitor Bortolin, engineer and researcher at RCGI, the membrane accounts for a significant portion of the inefficiency and manufacturing cost of current electrolyzers. Reducing or eliminating this dependence, without compromising the quality of the hydrogen produced, is one of the most promising routes to making the technology commercially viable on a larger scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge, however, is not trivial. Without the physical barrier of the membrane, hydrogen and oxygen risk recombining inside the reactor, which compromises the purity of the final gas and can generate operational risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The solution developed by USP and RCGI<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To solve this problem, researchers from RCGI and CCARBON, a research center linked to FAPESP and based at Esalq-USP, created a monitoring method based on image analysis. The technique tracks the multiphase flow of liquid inside the reactor, identifying the behavior of gas bubbles without the need to track them individually, a limitation of previous approaches. The result is more precise control of the separation between hydrogen and oxygen, even in a membrane-less design. The technology has already been patented at INPI, which signals technical maturity and potential for industrial application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the benefits highlighted by the researchers are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"line-height:1.8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced manufacturing costs, since the membrane is eliminated from the cell architecture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater equipment durability, with fewer components subject to wear and tear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanded commercial viability for electrolyzers on an industrial scale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The possibility exists to apply the same monitoring method to other processes with multiphase flow, such as quality control in the carbonated beverage industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does international research confirm about the technology?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brazilian breakthrough is not an isolated case. Studies published in journals such as Angewandte Chemie show that membrane-free electrolyzers have real potential to compete in cost with less clean hydrogen sources. A recent techno-economic analysis projected a production cost of US$1.81 per kilogram of green hydrogen for a membrane-free system, a value even lower than that of grey hydrogen and compatible with the technical targets set by the European Union and the United States Department of Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) comparison helps to put this impact into perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"line-height:1.8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Steam reforming of natural gas (grey hydrogen): between US$1.20 and US$4.00 per kilogram.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conventional electrolyzers, such as PEM and alkaline ones: between US$3.00 and US$8.00 per kilogram.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Membrane-less electrolyzers: around US$2.00 per kilogram, according to recent techno-economic studies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The figures indicate that the membrane-free route could bring green hydrogen closer to cost parity with traditional sources, a crucial step towards its adoption on an industrial scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does this matter to Brazil?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The country currently hosts thirteen advanced green hydrogen production initiatives, most of them linked to the Pec\u00e9m Complex hub, with billion-dollar investments already announced by companies such as Fortescue, Casa dos Ventos, and AES Brasil. Even so, the sector faces regulatory and electrical infrastructure bottlenecks that are expected to take years to resolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, advances such as the membrane-free electrolyzer from USP and RCGI play a complementary role. While large-scale production infrastructure advances, the electrolysis technology developed in the country shows that Brazil does not depend exclusively on imported solutions to reduce the cost of green hydrogen. It is also at the origin of innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies working with electrolyzers, green hydrogen, or related technologies, this case reinforces a strategic point: the next leap in the
