The energy transition has entered a less romantic and much more strategic phase. After years in which clean energy was treated primarily as a climate agenda, China and India have begun to see it as an instrument of industrial policy, energy security, and geopolitical influence. The central issue is no longer just reducing emissions. It's about occupying the production chains that can define competitiveness in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This movement is gaining momentum precisely when some Western markets are revising timelines, reducing ambitions, or postponing green hydrogen projects due to high costs, insufficient infrastructure, and difficulty in securing long-term purchase contracts. According to Reuters, China and India are using public policies, subsidies, industrial demand, and scale to try to create a market that has not yet fully matured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The transition has entered a new phase.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Green hydrogen is relevant because it can serve sectors that are difficult to electrify directly, such as fertilizers, refining, steelmaking, maritime transport, and the production of low-emission fuels. It is produced by water electrolysis using renewable electricity, unlike conventional hydrogen, which is still mostly associated with fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the market remains small. The International Energy Agency notes that low-emission hydrogen production has advanced since 2021, with over 200 investments committed, but still faces cost, infrastructure, and regulatory barriers. The IEA itself emphasizes that growth has not met all expectations from the beginning of the decade and remains uneven across regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This scenario explains why the current race should not be interpreted as simply expanding capacity. What is at stake is the early formation of a market. Countries that combine cheap renewable energy, competitive equipment, public financing, and industrial buyers can create advantages that are difficult to replicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Chinese logic is based on scale.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

China starts from a unique position. The country already dominates significant parts of the global supply chains for solar energy, batteries, electric vehicles, and renewable energy equipment. In green hydrogen, the strategy is similar: accelerate large-scale projects, reduce costs through industrial production, and integrate energy, manufacturing, and state planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IEA estimates that Chinese investments in clean energy exceeded US$625 billion in 2024, almost double the level of 2015. The country also achieved, in 2024, its wind and solar capacity target projected for 2030, six years ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the hydrogen sector, the data reinforces the speed of the movement. Reuters reports that China invested US$3.7 billion in green hydrogen production in the previous year, more than double that of the United States, according to Rystad Energy. The consultancy projects that the country could reach 2.6 million tons annually online by 2031, with US$26 billion in associated investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chinese advantage lies less in a single technology and more in its ability to coordinate the production chain, capital, infrastructure, and demand. Even so, the model is not without risks. The IEA points out that the expansion of Chinese renewable energy has progressed faster than the electricity grid, raising challenges in transmission, storage, and effective use of the generated energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian logic is demand.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India is pursuing a different priority: reducing energy dependence and creating its own industrial base for green hydrogen and its derivatives. Its National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for at least 5 million metric tons per year of green hydrogen by 2030, coupled with approximately 125 GW of new renewable capacity. The plan also envisions over 8 lakh crore rupees in investment, more than 600,000 jobs, and a reduction of nearly 50 million tons of annual emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most important point is that India is not just looking at production. The mission envisions mechanisms for demand creation, domestic manufacturing of electrolyzers, pilot projects, green hydrogen hubs, regulatory standards, and applied research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This design is relevant because many hydrogen projects fail before construction due to a lack of buyers. By stimulating contracts, reverse auctions, and consumption in sectors such as fertilizers, refining, and steel, India is trying to make the projects financially viable from the outset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West has become more selective.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The correct interpretation is not that the West has abandoned clean energy. The transition continues to receive capital, regulation, and innovation. The adjustment is focused on projects that depended on aggressive assumptions of cost reduction, infrastructure availability, and speed of adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This selectivity can be healthy, but it also opens up competitive space. While some markets recalibrate targets, China and India seek to occupy the gap between uncertainty and scale. This window is crucial because industrial chains rarely wait for global consensus to consolidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to watch out for from now on<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For B2B companies, the signal is clear: clean energy is no longer an isolated vertical and has begun to permeate decisions in supply, engineering, logistics, regulatory risk, and market positioning. The coming years should separate announced projects from truly competitive assets. Three factors deserve attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Final cost of green hydrogen per kilogram;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Existence of firm contracts with industrial buyers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Capacity to connect renewable energy, electrolysis, storage and transport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    China and India are making different bets, but with one essential similarity: both treat clean energy as a platform for economic development. China is betting on scale and manufacturing dominance. India is betting on organized demand, energy security, and market building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The conclusion is stark: the energy transition is no longer just a decarbonization agenda. It has become an industrial race.
